Festa della Repubblica

Today is a national holiday.........which by default has turned the weekend into a 3-day 'festa!'  This means that things are very, very quiet, and many stores are closed.  The nature of this holiday is rather complex, as different parts of the country perceive the situation differently.  Below is a short summary of what is being celebrated:

Festa della Repubblica is the Italian National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on 2 June each year, with the main celebration taking place in Rome. The Festa della Repubblica is one of the national symbols of Italy.

The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. After 85 years of Kingdom, Italy became a Republic and the male of the House of Savoy was sent into exile from the country.

We are taking advantage of this break to slow our pace down a bit.  We had breakfast around 8:30 with Joan, John and a new visitor, Maria.......who has taken the place of David and Val, who left for Sicily.  It is another totally amazing, sunny day......which called for a walk through the gardens after breakfast.  We suspect that the photos are somewhat 'too much of the same theme' here, but we cannot resist!  In any case we are back in the room collecting our thoughts about how to enjoy the day.

and when we want coffee in the middle of the day, this is where we go.......to the pantry!

DINNER AT CLIPPERS

As  this was a holiday, the staff got the afternoon and evening off.  Dinner was arranged for us at a local restaurant in Bogliasco called 'Clippers'.......quite the Italian sounding name!  In any case, it worked out to be a fun evening on the patio.  We even ended up getting 'bibbed' for the night!

In the picture below (left to right) John (Tufts and West Concord!), Joan (New York), Andrea (the best of the best!), Maria (Rome and Polynesia), Svetlana (Brown and Russia), Denise (Vassar and Rumania) and Karala (Yale and New Haven).......Rick and Stephanie not present as they went to see a cemetery in Genova!

The walk home.........beautiful evening
