We had a wonderful night's sleep and managed to stay in bed until around 8:30! We made our way down to breakfast after waking up with a wonderful shower (the bathroom has a wonderful 3' x 8' double rain shower!) and tea on the terrace. After breakfast, Fiske could not resist heading for the pool again.
It was difficult to pack our bags and head out again........such a beautiful day at a wonderful hotel!........but off we went! We had about a 2 hour drive, but we wanted to stop along the way in La Mora and Barolo, so we planned on 3.
The landscape in the Barolo region is truly beautiful........although having a wonderful day to travel makes a big difference.......mid-70's, blue sky and sunshine!
The village of La Mora
and this year's Giro d'Italia Bike Race
Finally arriving in Alassio at the Villa della Pergola
Just in time for an early check-in and lunch.
another room with a great balcony and view!
The Villa della Pergola was originally a private residence and extensive gardens built by an English family (pharmaceutical wealth) constructed in the late 19th century. The family held the property until 2006, when it was sold to a wealthy Italian family who renovated the buildings and gardens to convert the property into a hotel. The buildings and landscape are extraordinary, with the grounds being open for visitation by the public. The 'giardini' are recognized as one of the most prominent gardens in northern Italy.
The hotel also has a Michelin star restaurant........which was not open on Tuesdays when we were there. They did, however, have a special 'light' menu for the guests (all 3 of us!) in the main dining room. It was quite enjoyable.........but we were somewhat thankful (after paying the bill) that we got the lighter version from the kitchen rather than the full 'gastronomique' experience.........I would hate to see how much that might have cost!
